November is National Hospice & Palliative Care Month, a time to honor the heart and soul of UpliftedCare—our extraordinary team. Every day, you bring compassion and community connection to the forefront of your work. This month, we’re shining a light on the stories that define who we are: moments that remind us why we do what we do. We’ve asked our team to reflect on their personal journeys and share what it means to uplift others through care. These reflections will be featured throughout November, celebrating the spirit of UpliftedCare and the people who make it truly special.

Meet Our Team:

Fawn Hendershott – Executive Director

Fawn Hendershott - Executive Director

What keeps you rooted in this work – even on the hardest days?

“What keeps me rooted is remembering why I started. When I began as a nurse case manager, I felt like I was finally fulfilling my purpose as a nurse. Now, as Executive Director, I serve that same purpose—just in a different way. I believe every person deserves compassionate end-of-life care that honors their dignity, and I’m driven every day by the mission of this organization and the incredible team who lives it out.”

Is there a moment from your work that stands out to you as especially meaningful or human?

“I’ll never forget one of my early patients—a family who thought they’d have to separate their parents because of the father’s care needs. With our support, they were able to keep him at home, together, until he passed. His daughter thanked me through tears and said, “We couldn’t have done it without you.” Moments like that remind me why this work matters so deeply—they stay with you forever.”

When people express their fears of hospice to you, how do you help “redefine” their perception?

“I always tell people that hospice doesn’t mean giving up—it means choosing comfort, support, and dignity. It’s about helping you live fully and meaningfully with the time you have. Our team walks alongside patients and families, making sure they feel seen, supported, and never alone. There are still so many misconceptions about hospice, and I want our community to know that we can help you—earlier, and in more ways, than you might think.”

How has working in hospice/palliative care changed your perspective on life, family or community?

“This work has changed the way I see everything. It’s taught me to slow down, to cherish the people I love, and to appreciate small, ordinary moments. It’s also deepened my love for this community—especially because I grew up in Iroquois County, one of the areas we serve. Being part of a nonprofit that gives back to the same community that raised me means so much.”

Is there a moment or person who reminded you why you chose this work?

“Honestly, I’m reminded every day—through our staff and the families we serve. Hearing the stories and thank-yous that come in, seeing how our team supports one another through both joy and heartbreak, and witnessing the selflessness and compassion of our employees—all of it reminds me why I’m here. I love leading this organization, and I’m so proud of the heart behind our work.”
