November is National Hospice & Palliative Care Month, a time to honor the heart and soul of UpliftedCare—our extraordinary team. Every day, you bring compassion and community connection to the forefront of your work. This month, we’re shining a light on the stories that define who we are: moments that remind us why we do what we do. We’ve asked our team to reflect on their personal journeys and share what it means to uplift others through care. These reflections will be featured throughout November, celebrating the spirit of UpliftedCare and the people who make it truly special.

What keeps you rooted in this work – even on the hardest days?

“That no one, even small, act of kindness goes to waste. A small smile, gentle touch, sacred silence, and comforting presence goes a long way.

Is there a moment from your work that stands out to you as especially meaningful or human?

“There are so many moments on a daily basis. One particular moment that stands out is a patient, who has dementia, used to sing soprano in the choir. She does not remember a lot of recent details of her life, but she sings the words of those traditional hymns we listen every time I visit her. Witnessing her smile and the joy singing brings to her makes me feel gratitude for my calling.”

When people express their fears of hospice to you, how do you help “redefine” their perception?

“Normalizing their fears instead of negating them. Making them feel heard and then inquire what it means for them to have their loved one “die well” “

How has working in hospice/palliative care changed your perspective on life, family or community?

“Yes, it has helped me to slow down and pause, focus on who and what matters in life. In a loud and divisive world, I have faith in the kindness of people who live out their calling to make a difference in the lives of those who are nearing the end of their time on earth. I’ve met hospice/palliative staff embody compassion and a true heart of Christ to serve others. “
